BDSM is an abbreviated expression derived from a mix of three terms from the BDSM world relating to activities that are engaged in by participants in the scene, being:

BD - Bondage and Discipline

DS - Dominance and Submission

SM - Sadism and Masochism

These are three separate areas but are generally simply referred to as ‘BDSM’ for short. There are no rules that define which of these possible themes might interest you or what you should or should not engaged in.

As a side note, S&M activities are commonly considered to be the extreme area of the BDSM scene and many practitioners tend to stay clear of these activities.

You can look at BDSM as a world of possibilities that can accommodate your fantasies, desires or curiosity. It is any mutually pleasurable sexual activity between consenting adults that involves physical restraint (bondage), dominant/submissive role-playing, fetish dressing up, corporal punishment or other erotic activities.

A sexual encounter for which roles and BDSM activities have been negotiated is called “a scene”.
